How to record a leadership video without a script

On-camera coaching for executives and senior leaders recording their first video. Get past perfectionism, drop the script, start from a question you answer every day, embrace the raw take, and earn buyer trust before your first meeting.

If you're an executive or senior leader, you probably know you should be on camera more. You also probably reach for a script every time you try. The instinct to over-prepare is the single biggest thing keeping your leadership video from happening. Here's why scripts hurt on camera, how to choose a topic without one, and what showing up actually earns you.

Why scripts hurt on camera

Leaders default to perfectionism. The script feels safer than improvising. The problem is that a scripted delivery reads as scripted. Your audience can tell. Polished and rehearsed lands flat in the same moment that a slightly stumbling, present, real take feels like a person they want to do business with. Authenticity wins on camera. Every time.

Start from a question you already answer

You don't need a topic, you don't need a script, and you don't need to brainstorm. You answer questions all day, in customer calls, in your community, with your team. Think about the question you've answered most this month. That's your first video. Sit down and answer it the same way you would on a Zoom with a prospect.

Give yourself permission to stumble

It's okay to pause. It's okay to lose your train of thought for a second and pick it back up. Keep going. The first take is almost always fine. A posted, raw, authentic video will always outperform a polished video that never got recorded, because the polished one doesn't exist.

What this earns you

Here's the part that justifies the effort. When a prospect lands on your content and watches you answer a real question before they've ever spoken to you, they walk into the first meeting already trusting you. The work of building credibility is partially done before the call starts. That's the real ROI of showing up on camera as a leader. Not views. Trust at the moment of first contact.

Try it this week
